Heritage

A wealth of cultural heritage awaits the visitors to the area, from Neolithic sites to the remains of 18th and 19th century industrial and farming acitivities, such mines, quarries, field systems and abandoned farmsteads.

The landscape heritage of the West Pennine Moors is rich and complex and what we see today is shaped by long and varied history of human activity.

With a little exploration, you can find traces of ancient terraced fields and burial mounds or straight sections of the Roman Road.  You can also visit more formal heritage attractions dotted throughout the area, such as houses, towers, museums and gardens or step back in time and take a steam train along the East Lancashire Railway from Bury to Rawtenstall.
